PPGPL’S Facial Hair Policy

  • Employees should be clean-shaven in the areas of the mask seal.
  • Beards shall not be worn. One and one-half days’ growth can affect sealing area of respirator.
  • Moustaches and sideburns are acceptable as long as they do not interfere with the function of the respirator or extend into the respirator sealing surface.

Respirators for PPGPL’s Plant Access

For Emergency Evacuation

  • PPGPL utilises the MSA Advantage 1000 respirator for its employees.
  • Contractor employers can utilise this brand or any other that has received NIOSH approval in accordance with 42 Code of Federal Regulations Part 84 (42 CFR 84) for acid gases such as chlorine dioxide (ClO₂), sulfur dioxide (SO₂), hydrogen fluoride (HF), hydrochloric acid (HCl) and gases such as formaldehyde (CH₂O), ammonia (NH₃) and methylamine (CH₃NH₂).

Examples of acceptable respirators include the following:

  • Gerson 9955 Full Face Respirator (NIOSH approved respirator)
  • 3M 6000 Series (NIOSH approved respirator)

Any contractor employer desirous of utilizing a respirator brand other than the MSA Advantage must receive prior approval from PPGPL’s HSS department.

Jobs with Potential Benzene Exposure

The respirator type is determined by the potential Benzene Airborne concentration:

Half mask unpowered/air purifying respirator with organic vapour cartridge, or

Full-face mask with organic vapour cartridges.

Any contractor employer desirous of utilizing a respirator brand other than the 3M and associated cartridges must receive prior approval from PPGPL’s HSS department.

Jobs with Potential Naturally Occurring Radioactive Material

Half-face respirator with P100 cartridges. However, access to areas with NORM is dependent on the measured level of radiation.
